Current Issues Javan Rhinos face in their ecosystems due to the pesky humans!
1. Javan Rhinos are a critically endangered species, and are offered some protection at the Ujong Kulon National Park. However, the persistence of the human threat continues to put Javan Rhinos in a bit of a bother. As stated before, they were hunted for their horns, even though that has been made illegal now. As of 2012, they became extinct in Vietnam.
2. The first issue is their habitat loss. The last Javan Rhinos are living inside a national park for protection, but humans are still there to trouble them again. In the forest near the national park, human activities are hurting the rhinos. Also, the Javan Rhinos are being threatened by the Arenga Palm, which is a native plant to Southeast Asia. This hurts the plants that are a main food source for the Javan Rhinos.
3. The second problem is that there are only 57 rhinos left in the wild. The small amount of genetic diversity is making it very difficult for the Javan Rhino population to survive both Density Dependent Factors, such as diseases, and Density Independent Factors, such as earthquakes.
4. Another loss that greatly affected the Javan Rhinos many years ago was in Vietnam when Agent Orange, a chemical removing leaves from plants, -destroyed most of the Javan Rhino's habitat. They were also affected by agricultural conversion. Because of these, the Javan Rhinos were nearly wiped out.
